This means there’s probably more to learn as you get more advanced and that you can have a go at some more difficult courses.

If you learn to wakeboard then, you will probably find that it improves your life in a number of ways.

If you want to take up a fun water sport that looks cool and is accessible enough to pick up easily while still rewarding commitment, then you could do a lot worse than to learn to wakeboard. Wakeboarding is a water sport in which you are towed by a speed boat, much like waterskiing, except that here you balance on a board rather than on skis. In other words then, for the uninitiated, waterskiing is to water sports what snowboarding is to winter sports.

This means that you are given a much larger surface area to balance on, which distributes your weight more evenly across the water and thereby makes balancing mildly easier. This then means that it’s slightly easier to learn to wakeboard if you have never done it before, making it more accessible for someone new. This doesn’t mean that it’s easier as a sport however, and like any activity that simply depends on how far you want to push yourself. An initial instinct might be to go slower to begin with in a bid to make wakeboarding easier, but actually this won’t necessarily work as it will leave you with more slack against the rope and so less to lean against for balance. Just as is the case on a bike, going slowly actually makes balancing more difficult, even if it does feel a little less scary. As such the only thing that can really make a difference is to get wakeboard ballast.

Of course as well as wakeboard ballast, you should also learn to wakeboard in quiet conditions. When you wakeboard you are literally ‘riding the wake’ of the boat, where the term ‘wake’ refers to the small wave created by the back of the boat. This is what you will want to balance on, and is what will provide you with the extra speed you need. However if the sea is choppy this will be more difficult and the wake can be broken by other waves. As such, when you first learn to wakeboard, do so in quiet and calm conditions and progress to the wilder days.

Other balancing practice will also help, so don’t pass up an opportunity to improve your balance and to practice staying upright at awkward angles.

When you first learn to wakeboard you should also be careful about the type of board you choose to use. Here the best option is a larger wakeboard which will give you even more surface area to balance on (this is even more crucial if you are large yourself). As you progress you will probably move on to a smaller wakeboard which will be lighter and so make jumps and tricks much easier. As you learn to wakeboard then, you should find that you slowly move on to smaller boards.

Another beginners’ wakeboard tip is to get a wakeboard ballast. Wakeboard ballast is essentially the same as fat sacs for boats, but aimed specifically at use with wakeboards. This is very useful as someone who is starting to learn to wakeboard as it means they won’t be thrown about quite as much and can rely on the rope to offer them stability rather than making life more tricky.

Well fortunately, while there is a lot of room for improving your wakeboarding skills, it is initially fairly easy to pick up the basics when you learn to wakeboard compared to waterskiing. This is because the board is larger and more stable than wasterskis and that makes balancing easier. However, if you want to learn to wakeboard and are concerned you might not be able to balance, then you can practice on a range of similar devices such as a balance board, or even a skateboard. While they are slightly different, this will give you a good idea of how to balance on a board, and will teach you to correctly distribute your weight and keep low enough to give yourself more stability.

The first way to do this is by leaning back more than you might on a wakeboard or with skis. This way you will be putting more weight on the rope and less weight on the water though you should also ensure that you don’t lean back too far so that your legs fly out from underneath you. This is the most important thing to master when you learn to barefoot waterski and will provide the foundation for the rest.

Another important tip when you learn to barefoot waterski is that you need to go fast in order to be able to counter the weight on the water. Again this means that you weight will be pulled forwards rather than going downwards and pushing through the water, which will mean you stay upright and are less likely to sink. The rope should be taut as a result and this is what will allow you to move quickly. At the same time, use fat sacks in your boat in order to evenly distribute weight and weigh it down to help it cut through the waves and stay stable. This way, fat sacks ensure that when you put your weight on the rope, it is more stable and steady, rather than throwing you around and potentially up-ending you.

Finally, make sure that when you first learn to barefoot waterski, you do so in calm conditions – as if the sea is too choppy this will make it more difficult and throw you off balance. Find a safe place to practice, and if you can get professional instruction. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be ready to take your act on the road!

Barefoot waterskiing is exactly what it sounds like – where an individual waterskis, but rather than having skis attached, they use only their bare feet. This is a fun activity, and unlike wakeboarding or conventional skiing it doesn’t require lots of time to get strapped into a large board. Believe it or not it’s actually also safer to learn to barefoot waterski, as if you should fall off you will be able to easily swim to safety, and won’t risk hitting yourself on your wakeboard or skiis. While it may be safer to learn to barefoot waterski though, it will also impress everyone looking on – particularly as many people aren’t even aware that barefoot waterskiing exists.

To learn to barefoot waterski you simply need to grab onto the handle and go, but without first strapping into skis or a wakeboard. This is understandably slightly more difficult to balance as you have a lot less surface area touching the water, and you need to adjust appropriately.

Water sports are activities that are enjoyed by many an ‘adrenaline junkie’. This is probably the case because the soft landing provided by the water allows for high speeds and a sense of exhilaration that comes with that. However this isn’t the only appeal of watersports such as barefoot waterskiing, and in fact they have many other additional merits.

For example, someone who enjoys waterskiing will find it does wonders for their health and this works in many ways. Not only will they need to hold themselves upright against the taut rope – thereby strengthening their muscles including their crucial core muscles – but they’ll also need to regularly swim to and from the boat which is well known to be one of the best resistance exercises. This will burn fat while building muscle, but they’ll also get additional benefits of being in the sun (which has countless positive effects) and of being outdoors and breathing fresh sea air.

However the downside to a longer and wider board is that they are heavier and this in turn means that it’s more difficult to use them to do tricks and jumps which means as you progress you might want to move onto a smaller board.

This means that if you are intending on keeping the same board for a long time on your wakeboarding career, that you might want to purchase a smaller board in order to be able to keep the same one as you get better. This also means that you might want to look into a medium sized board which will have many of the advantages of both sizes – being slightly easier but meaning you are also better able to do tricks. Bear in mind that when you change to a different board the shock can be quite a lot to get used to and if you downsize a lot this will affect your performance detrimentally.

Finally you need to consider you size and here the board will essentially reflect the size of the user. With a bigger person there will be more weight and force and thereby a larger surface area will be required to distribute the weight.

If you are interested in starting wakeboarding then you will probably want to buy your own board in order to get started and to practice and to add your own personal flair to your hobby with a wakeboard you can call your own. This will be your companion through the rest of your hobby and the two of you will hopefully become quite a team on the water.
